Welcome to Catholic Art Appreciation! The purpose of this book is to help our Catholic youth love edifying art! We want them to think about what they are seeing, notice the details, understand the meaning behind the artwork, but most of all, to use beautiful art to help them in their spiritual growth. When it comes to religious artwork, if it isn’t edifying, what’s the point? Too many modern works of art are nothing but trash.
Go through this book with your student or child in whatever way you think is best. Take it slow. There is no rush. The questions are on the pages to help initiate conversation about the artwork. They do not have to be used. Cover them at first if you wish, and then ask the student to talk about what they are seeing: first impressions, overall feelings, observations, etc. When you ask a question to the student, then pause and wait for their answer before moving on to the next. Only do a few pages at a time, especially if the child is starting to lose interest. It should be fun!
Each artist is listed on the first piece of his artwork collection with his picture and name. They are grouped together by the artist who created them. Notice the styles and techniques used by that particular artist. Discuss them.
The captions for the artwork are at the end of the book.
