“I have written this essay in the spirit of Democritus, who was famously named “The Laughing Philosopher.” My purpose in it is not only to draw the reader into a consideration of human nature, but also to keep up a lively discourse on the subject. At times this involves humor; at others, startling aperçus; and at still others, unusual or unfamiliar perspectives. On this subject, both the writer and the reader need to be nimble. Always, my aim is to engage the reader with the ever-new question of the nature of human nature; and to invite him or her to join with me in investigating the issue in a fresh way. My method is always dialogic. I strive to write in a conversational manner to invite the reader to dialogue with me. On another level I also strive to be always in dialogue with those thinkers who over the centuries have attempted to answer the be-all, end-all question: what is the nature of human nature? Without their previous efforts I could not have undertaken this essay.”
